Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VIN decoder?
expand_more
A VIN decoder translates the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number into detailed information about a vehicle: make, model, year, trim, engine, transmission, plant of manufacture, and 130+ other decoded fields. Our decoder uses the official NHTSA vPIC database, which is populated directly by manufacturers.
Is the VIN decoder really free?
expand_more
Yes. The full NHTSA-powered VIN decode is 100% free with no signup or credit card. We only charge for premium add-ons like full accident and title history reports, which come through our NMVTIS-approved partners.
Where is the VIN located on my vehicle?
expand_more
You'll find the 17-character VIN in several places: on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), on the driver-side door jamb sticker, on the engine block, and on your title, registration, and insurance card. VINs never contain the letters I, O, or Q to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.
How accurate is a VIN decoder?
expand_more
Our decoder pulls directly from NHTSA vPIC — the same database automakers are legally required to populate. For factory specs, accuracy is considered authoritative. Note that post-factory modifications won't show up in the decode.
What can I learn from decoding a VIN?
expand_more
Make, model, year, trim level, body type, engine displacement and cylinders, fuel type, transmission, drivetrain, plant country and city, number of doors, GVWR, series, and 100+ other decoded fields. Plus open safety recalls and crash ratings tied to that make/model/year.
Can I decode a VIN for a motorcycle or truck?
expand_more
Yes. NHTSA vPIC covers passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, buses, and heavy-duty trucks. Any vehicle sold in the US with a standard 17-character VIN can be decoded.

NHTSA vPIC Database

Our VIN decoder is powered by the NHTSA Vehicle Product Information Catalog — the authoritative federal database that automakers are legally required to populate. Every manufacturer selling vehicles in the US submits VIN data to vPIC, making it the most comprehensive and accurate VIN decode source available.

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured after 1981. The first 3 characters identify the manufacturer and country, characters 4-8 describe the vehicle attributes, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 is the model year, character 11 is the plant code, and 12-17 are the serial number.

Free vs Paid VIN Reports

Free VIN decodes include factory specs, recalls, and safety ratings — everything available from public government sources. Paid VIN history reports add accident records, title brands, odometer rollback detection, and the ownership-count timeline (number of previous owners and length of ownership — not personal identity), which require access to private insurance and NMVTIS databases.
